In the following schematic diagram for the preparation of hydrogen gas as shown in the figure given below, what would happen if following changes are made?
(a) in place of zinc granules, same amount of zinc dust is taken in the test tube
(b) instead of dilute sulphuric acid, dilute hydrochloric acid is taken
(c) in place of zinc, copper turnings are taken
(d) sodium hydroxide is taken in place of dilute sulphuric acid and the tube is heated

i) If same amount of Zn dust is taken in the test tube then the reaction will be comparatively faster and hydrogen gas will evolve with greater speed.
It is becoz zinc dust has larger surface area than zinc granules.
(ii) With dilute HCl almost same amount of gas is evolved.
(iii) With Cu turnings, hydrogen gas will not evolve because copper is less reactive, so, it does not react with dil. HCl. Hence, no reaction will take place.
(iv)Zinc also reacts with NaOH. So, if NaOH is taken, then hydrogen gas will be evolved.

b). If hydrochloric acid is used in place of Sulphuric acid, then the products formed will be hydrogen gas and zinc chloride instead of zinc sulphate. There will be no change in the reaction rate.

c). Copper is less reactive than zinc when it has to respond with dilute acids. This is because copper is a noble metal and it lies in the lower reactivity series. So if the zinc granules are replaced with copper turnings, then no reaction will occur and so hydrogen gas will not be produced.
d). If Sodium hydroxide is taken, then hydrogen gas and sodium zincate will be formed. If this mixture is heated, then hydrogen gas will be developed at a faster rate as heating increases the rate of reaction.
