Yes, gender division is based completely on stereotypes. This can be proved with the simple example of the stereotype that women are always supposed to take care of the households while the men have to be the sole breadwinners of the family. This stereotype has been around for centuries and at a particular period of time, women were not even allowed to complete their education. The people believed that the right place of women was in the homes. At one point in the history of London, when the women started losing their industrial jobs due to machinery, conservatives started rallying against the presence of women in public places. Because of this, the women had to retreat to the domestic spheres. The middle class and upper class women faced higher levels of isolation.
Hope this helped! :D
